This article delineates the recent UK Supreme Court ruling, pronounced on 19 February 2021, in case of Uber.
Even though this ruling discusses the applicable employment laws in the UK jurisdiction, but it fundamentally discusses the rights and obligations of Uber drivers and the overall relationship between Uber and its drivers. In that process, captivating findings have been made by the appellate authorities, in form of how Uber actually operates and the influence it has on its so-called independent drivers, which is what intrigued me to write this article.
It further discusses the potential impact of this ruling in the Indian context.
It was first published on the Taxmann platform on 26 February 2021. To supplement the article, I have also recorded a video, in collaboration with taxmann.com, wherein I have explained the entire ruling through a presentation.
